Google Daydream could soon support multiple controllers

Enable Daydream VR Compatibility Google Virtual Reality

Google Daydream VR is Google's virtual reality solution for mobile devices. What started as more of a cool tech demo has turned into a whole lot more, as it's a somewhat popular gaming platform now, too. Complete with Unity support, developers can develop games for it pretty easily. Interestingly, the changelog for the latest version of the Google Daydream SDK for Unity suggests support for multiple controllers is coming soon. The Daydream VR controller is a small TV remote-shaped device that can fit in one hand. It's effectively a Wii remote for virtual reality. Imagine if you could have two?

Support for multiple controllers has been requested many times simply because it could double the number of inputs for a game. Obviously, there aren't any applications that can make use of it yet. It's one for the future that developers can avail of. More inputs mean games and applications making use of Google Daydream can offer more complicated input combinations at a time. Not to mention that it can allow for a more immersive experience. You could have one controller for your left hand and one for your right hand and control those arms independently in-game.

It's unclear if current Google Daydream devices are going to be able to support multiple controllers at this point in time. It could be the case that Google needs to release an updated version of their current headset. Currently, the platform remains somewhat of a gimmick with very few actual games available. The problem lies in that games won't be released on the platform if it's not deemed profitable for companies. If Google is starting to take it seriously, though, then that means we may see a greater uptake in the future. With the likes of the Adreno 630 powering many top flagship phones, the power for virtual reality on our smartphones is here. We just need the applications to utilise it.
