Ever since HMD Global announced that Nokia-branded smartphones would return in 2017, speculation's been running rampant. HMD Global opted to kick things off with the budget-oriented Nokia 6, Nokia 5, and the Nokia 3, and followed them up with its first flagship, the Nokia 8. Now, rumor has it that it's prepping its most powerful Nokia-branded flagship yet: The Nokia 9.
The Nokia 8 had a high-end list of specifications, including the Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip, a 5.3-inch IPS display, dual 13MP+13MP cameras, and a 3090mAh battery. It ran a nearly-stock version of Android Nougat, and it recently got an update to Android Oreo.
But while the Nokia 8 was an excellent first attempt at a flagship by any measure, it had its fair share of flaws. Unlike most of 2017's flagship smartphones, it didn't have a 18:9 display with small bezels. The cameras, too, fell short of the competition, even though the Nokia 8 was priced higher than the OnePlus 5, OnePlus 5T, Xiaomi Mi Mix 2, and others.
Recently, we've started to see reports of Nokia's 2018 smartphone lineup. The Nokia 6 (2018) has already stopped by TENAA, China's regulatory electronics authority. And both the Nokia 6 (2018) and the aforementioned Nokia 9 (with model number TA-1042) received 3C certification in China.
The Nokia 9 is rumored to be HMD Global's most expensive smartphone yet, and predictably, it's said to have the best specifications of any Nokia-branded Android device released so far. Thanks to documents filed with the Federal Communications Commission U.S., we have a pretty good idea of what to expect.
The Nokia 9 will have a 5.5-inch OLED display, a first for HMD. The aspect ratio, resolution, and pixel density of the display remain a mystery, but it'll sport a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 system-on-chip (SoC)– the same chip that powers the Nokia 8.
The choice of SoC comes as a bit of a surprise, given that the Nokia 9 is expected to be announced in January. In Q1 2018, we're likely to see flagship phones powered by the next-generation Snapdragon 845.
The FCC listing didn't mention RAM, but listed the Nokia 9's internal storage as a 128GB UFS 2.1 Samsung module. The phone will have a dual rear camera consisting of a 12MP and 13MP sensor, a 5MP front camera (a downgrade from the Nokia 8's 13MP front camera), and a 3250mAh battery with 18W fast charging support.
The Nokia 9 is expected to be announced on January 18 in China. (The Nokia 6 (2018) may launch at the same event, but that remains to be seen.) In any case, the FCC certification is a pretty good sign that Nokia's next flagship phone will launch soon.
