OxygenOS 5.0 Android Oreo Released for OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T

OnePlus recently released the latest Open Beta version of Android Oreo for the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, with some UI bugs amongst other things. That build was mostly to fix performance and battery-related bugs. Now, OnePlus has gone ahead and released OxygenOS 5.0 for the OnePlus 3/3T in the form of a staged rollout.

It is possible that this stable build may still have some bugs that sneaked through the Open Betas, but either way, this marks a much quicker release than OxygenOS 4.0 of last year. OnePlus isn't usually known for its update speed for stable builds, but the company has started to turn that around with the upgrade to Nougat (besting many manufacturers) and now their release of Oreo. The OnePlus 5 and OnePlus 5T are also said to receive the upgrade to Android Oreo in early 2018, with the Open Beta series starting this month.

Android Oreo also marks the end of life for major upgrades for both the OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T, as two incremental Android version upgrades were promised and then subsequently fulfilled. It is unsure at this time whether OnePlus will upgrade both devices to Android 8.1 Oreo. If the open betas are anything to go off of, it also seems that Project Treble support is also not on board, so the fate of the device's future in terms of upgrades and support will largely be placed in the community's hands from now on.

The changelog for the OxygenOS 5.0 update is as below:

System

  • Update to Android O (8.0)
  • Added Parallel Apps
  • Added Picture in Picture
  • Added Auto-fill
  • Added Smart text selection
  • New Quick Settings design
  • Updated security patch to September

Launcher

  • Added notification dots
  • New app folder design
  • Now able to upload photos directly to Shot on OnePlus

Despite the seemingly small length of the changelog, it is a pretty big changelog, as the majority of changes are of course under the "Update to Android O" change. What is surprising in the changelog is the security patch level. Considering we are already at November 2017, including the security patch from September seems like a poor choice.

The OTA is beginning to roll out now, with Canadian users of the OnePlus 3T reporting first that they have received it. Captured OTA links should start appearing soon, so if you're interested, give it a try and let us know in the comments what you think of OxygenOS 5.0!
