OnePlus Shares What They Have Learned About Software Over the Years

As we get closer to the launch event and inevitable release of the OnePlus 5T, OnePlus has been sharing various stories about the new product as well as the company. They first discussed why they're sticking with the 3.5mm headphone port on their upcoming flagship and they have also shared their thoughts on wireless charging technology. Today, the company is focusing on software and has shared their experience about what they've learned since the launch of the OnePlus One.

In the forum post, we learn that OnePlus was founded on the idea that too many smartphones on the market were "sloppy on the details". Their goal was to set out and create a no-frills smartphone that checked all the boxes the customer wanted in a device. Hardware is a big part of the story but often times it's the software that can make or break the user experience. This still holds true today just as it did back when the OnePlus One was launched with CyanogenOS.

The partnership with Cyanogen did not end up working out though. So for the OnePlus 2, the company had to become more independant for the software it used. They hired a number of talented developers from the community, but the company admits the process was incredibly rushed due to a time crunch. This was also a time when the company bragged about the phone being a 2016 flagship killer and they are also admitting it did not even come close. On the software end, they felt this was because their team was fragmented and inefficient.

For the OnePlus 3, they were able to focus on unifying the software division and while that meant letting some people go, the results proved to be better for the company in the longer run. The newly unified software team worked faster and more efficiently than ever, and since things were more organized, it allowed them to allocate more time to testing and tweaking the features.

They have brought this mindset over to the development of the OnePlus 5T and are more confident than ever that they will be able to deliver a product that people will enjoy.
