November Update for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL Adds Screen Color Modes, Clicking Noise Fix and More

At the start of each month, Google usually releases a couple of things for its community. This inevitably includes a new Android security update for supported Pixel and Nexus devices as well as an updated look at Android's distribution numbers for the month. Right on time, Google announced and started rolling out their November security update; but for Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners, this update also includes some new features and bug fixes as well.

The smaller of the two new Pixel phones launched last month was mostly given a thumbs up in reviews. Some reviewers pointed out the dated design as so many newer smartphones are shifting to slimmer bezels, but for the most part it was well received by the community. The Pixel 2 XL, however, did not receive the same treatment. In fact, the larger of the two new Pixel smartphones has been plagued with display issue after display issue, ranging from low brightness (at around 400 nits) to a seemingly muted color space, to even a blue tint issue when viewing the device from even the slightest angle.

Not only that, but there are some units which have been experiencing a clicking sound from the speaker of the device. So, along with November's security patches, the Pixel 2 and the Pixel 2 XL both receive a number of features and changes to fix up these issues. There is now a new color mode option that lets you use between Natural, Boosted (which is the old Vivid mode), and Saturated. Google hopes this new Saturated mode helps those who are wanting a display with colors that pop.

Google had acknowledged that the clicking noise was a software issue and that they would be able to fix it in an update. This was suspected since disabling NFC temporarily fixed the issue. The bug fix for this issue is now included in the November security update.

Another new change is the dimming navigation bar buttons that many noticed in the first developer preview of Android 8.1. Google says further enhancements will be included in their December update so Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL owners can look forward to much more in the future.
