The Moto Z Receives App Shortcuts, Round Icons, and More with 7.1.1 Nougat Update

Next Tuesday on July 25, Lenovo-owned Motorola will be taking the stage in New York City to announce a brand new smartphone. The rumor mill suggests that the main focus of this event will be the upcoming Moto Z2 Force, but even with a new flagship on the way, that doesn't mean Motorola has forgotten about its older hardware.

According to a tip that was sent in to TechDroider, the original Moto Z is now receiving the update to Android 7.1.1 Nougat. In addition to the latest July 2017 security patch, the 7.1.1 update also includes round app icons, App Shortcuts, improved Doze functionality, and Google Duo as a new pre-installed Google app.

The Android 7.1.1 Nougat update appears to be hitting Moto Z handsets in Hong Kong and Indonesia at the moment, but the rollout is expected to expand to more countries soon.

Motorola doesn't have the best track record in the world for getting timely updates to existing hardware, and while this is yet another example of that, we're still pleased to see 7.1.1 finally make its way to the Moto Z.
