BlackBerry has gone through a big transition over the last few years as a result of the company losing marketshare in the smartphone market. We've seen them stop making phones entirely, and instead will license out their brand to various OEMs with TCL being their main customer at this time. BlackBerry's BBM service was a big reason why some people still used their phones, but now it's available as an independent application in app stores from Apple, Google and even Amazon.
They've even started to refocus their entire company on the enterprise market, since security is a big goal of theirs and businesses are willing to pay a lot of money to keep their data secure. Yesterday though, the company announced a new SDK that would enable developers to embed BlackBerry's messaging service inside of both Android and iOS applications. The service has been available in beta, but it is now available for any developers to implement.
As the name implies though, this is meant for the enterprise market as it will end up costing $29 per user per year to use the BBM Enterprise SDK. On top of that, if you want the people who use the service to be able to place voice and video calls then that price goes up to $70 per user per year. The company hopes this move will help them compete with the likes of Twilio which is another cloud communications platform as a service that many have come to know.
So while the BlackBerry BBM Enterprise SDK will not be for everyone, it will allow certain businesses to implement messaging functionality into their application relatively easily. This enables them to focus on other parts of the application and be assured that the communication aspect is secure. We'll just have to wait and see if the service is good enough to compete with the rest of the market.
