Flip phones are still very popular in some parts of the world, apparently. According to ETNews, Samsung is set to launch a new Folder phone in South Korea. The Folder phone is known as model number SM-W2017 and it will have features taken from other flagship devices of the Korean OEM.
The information of the premiere has been anonymously given by one of the officials of the local telecom carriers in Korea speaking to ETNews.
The phone is expected to have a 4.2-inch dual OLED display screens. Samsung will reportedly use the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 430 processor clocked at 1.4 GHz, 64 GBs of internal storage and 2,300 mAh battery. There is no mention about the RAM capacity. The phone will also feature a 12-megapixel rear and 5-megapixel front-facing camera. It will be running Android as its operating system, though information on the exact Android version is not yet available.
According to the source, the Korean OEM will implement features such as fingerprint scanning for Samsung Pay, include Samsung Knox, and feature dust resistance. That list may imply that the folder phone is aimed at customers in the business area. The aforementioned features can already be found in the Galaxy S series.
The pricing is still unknown, but the source believes that the phone will be priced higher than any other folder phones.
The SM-W2017 is not the only folder device that Samsung offer. The company plans to launch the Galaxy Folder 2 in the upcoming months. The phone will be equipped with 3.8-inch screen, Snapdragon 425 processor, and 1950 mAh battery. An estimated price tag will be set between 200,000 and 300,000 won ($175-$265).
Will these phones be available worldwide? It's hard to predict, but we aren't sure that there are a lot of fans of flip phones here at XDA. Perhaps nostalgia plays a small part here?
