Google has released the Android distribution numbers for the month of April. The data was recorded in a 7-day period ending on April 3, and it's also worth mentioning that any version which has less than 0.1% distribution is not shown in this data. So chances are there might be thousands of Android devices running older versions in the wild, but just because they don't have more than 0.1% of share in the total active install, they're not on this list.
Speaking of the distribution numbers for this month, Android Nougat continues to show a steady growth this month as well. The combined share of Android 7.0 and 7.1 is now 4.9% of total active Android devices, representing a healthy 2.1 percentage point increase over last month. In fact, Android Nougat was the only version to represent a growth in this month's data as all other versions saw a decline in share. The increase is most likely due to the fact that more new devices are now shipping with Android Nougat running out of the box.
With the 32% of active Android devices, Android Lollipop still remains to be the most used version of Android, but as more OEMs launch devices with the latest version of Android, this number is now dropping steadily. Android 6.0.x Marshmallow takes the second place with 31.2% of active devices, down 0.1 compared to previous month. Then, we have Android 4.4.x KitKat taking up the third spot with 20% of active devices, which is down 0.8 compared to last month.
Elsewhere, Android Jellybean (4.1.x, 4.2x and 4.3) is now running on 10.1% of active devices, showing a 1.2 drop compared to last month. Finally, both Android 4.0.x Ice Cream Sandwich and 2.3.x Gingerbread are currently running on 0.9% of total active devices.
